Most days, the tide here does what you'd expect — comes in, goes out, moves a manageable strip of sand either way. Then a few times a year, usually without a cloud in the sky, it goes noticeably further than that: the water pushes higher up the beach than normal at high tide, and pulls back further than normal at low tide. That's a king tide, and it's not a storm, not sea level rise happening in real time, and not something anyone announces with a siren — it's just orbital mechanics doing something slightly unusual for a few days.

It's not really about the "king" part

"King tide" isn't a scientific term — the real name is a perigean spring tide, which is a mouthful for a fairly simple idea. A regular spring tide (nothing to do with the season) happens twice a month, whenever the sun, moon, and Earth line up during a new or full moon, and their combined gravity pulls the water a bit harder than usual. A king tide is what happens when that same alignment coincides with the moon being at perigee — the closest point in its orbit to Earth — which means its pull on the ocean is at its strongest for the month. Line those two things up together and you get the highest predicted tides of the year, and, a couple weeks later in the same cycle, some of the lowest.

When this actually happens here In Florida, these events cluster mainly from around September through January, tied to the fall and winter full and new moons — worth knowing if your trip happens to land in that window. It's not a single day; a king tide period usually plays out over a few days around the peak, not one dramatic afternoon.

What it actually looks like at the beach

On the high end, the water simply claims more sand than it normally would — the dry stretch you'd usually spread a towel on gets narrower for a few hours around high tide, and the waterline can push closer to the dune line than people expect. It's not dangerous on its own, it's just less beach to work with for that window.

On the low end, roughly two weeks later in the same lunar cycle, you get the opposite: an unusually large stretch of sandbar and normally-submerged bottom left exposed. Is this the flooding thing you've seen on the news

Honestly, mostly not, at least not on the open Gulf side where the main beach sits. The flooding you'll see reported around Florida during king tide season — streets underwater on a sunny day, water backing up through storm drains — tends to hit low-lying bayside spots with seawalls and stormwater systems, not a wide, sloped Gulf beach like Siesta Key's. Sarasota's own example of this was downtown, at Bayfront Park on the bay side, during a king tide that happened to coincide with a tropical storm passing offshore — the two events stacked on top of each other, which is usually what it takes to actually cause real flooding rather than just a smaller stretch of dry sand for an afternoon.

We haven't personally documented flooding on the main sand at Siesta Key itself during a king tide, and the open-beach geometry here works in its favor compared to a canal or a seawalled street. How to actually check before you go

You don't need to track lunar perigee tables yourself.
