This sounds made up until you see the footage. In September 2024, people at Siesta Key Beach filmed the waves genuinely glowing electric blue in the dark — not an editing trick, real bioluminescence, the same kind of phenomenon Florida's east coast has entire kayak tour businesses built around. It's just far less predictable here, and nobody's selling tickets to it.
What's actually causing it
The glow comes from dinoflagellates — microscopic plankton that produce light through a chemical reaction when they're disturbed. A wave breaking, a fish darting past, your foot stepping into the water at night — any of that agitation can trigger the flash of blue-green light. When there are enough of them in the water at once, the effect is strong enough to light up a breaking wave.
If you want to actually try to see it
Roughly June through September is when it's been reported here, which lines up with when dinoflagellates are most active in warm Gulf water. A night with little to no moon helps a lot — a bright full moon can wash out the glow before you even notice it. Get away from artificial light, let your eyes adjust for a few minutes, and watch the waves breaking at the shoreline rather than looking at still water.
What not to expect
Don't go in expecting the intensity you'd see on a professional tour on the east coast — this is an unpredictable, naturally occurring event here, not a curated experience. Some nights it's a faint shimmer in the foam, other nights (like the ones that got filmed) it's a genuinely bright glow. There's no way to guarantee which one you'll get.
